What Is Fibromyalgia And What Are The Causes?

FMS (A.K.A Fibromyalgia syndrome), is a long term condition that causes pain throughout the body. Other symptoms are:

  • Increased sensitivity to pain
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Brain or fibro fog, problems with memory and concentration
  • Headaches
  • IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), a digestive condition that causes stomach bloating and pain

Treatments include medicine, therapies like CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) and lifestyle changes such as exercise and relaxation techniques.

What causes it?

It’s thought to be related to an unusual level of specific chemicals in the brain and changes in the way the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) processes pain messages are carried throughout the body. Also, could be genetically linked. In many cases, it could be triggered by a physical/emotional stressed event like giving birth or an injury. Anyone can develop fibromyalgia but it affects around 7 times as many women as men. Can occur during any age but mostly 30 to 50. Some studies suggest nearly 1 in every 20 people may be affected by fibromyalgia to some degree.

How Does CBD Work for Fibromyalgia?

Scientists don’t know why CBD reduces some fibromyalgia symptoms, or why it works for some and not others. However, the pain-relieving effects of CBD are probably due to the effects on the brain, which could interrupt pain pathways that send signals. CBD links with specialised receptors in the brain, one of which is the CB2 receptor, which plays a role in managing pain and inflammation. A 2016 study shows that the lack of endocannabinoids may be at the top of chronic pain syndromes. So using CBC may help with chronic pain but more research needs to be done.

You Are Probably Wondering If There’s Any Side Effects or Risks of CBD for Fibromyalgia? Yes, There Is, So Bare in Mind!

So it’s best to talk to your doctor first as CBD may interact with over the counter prescriptions. Also, a concern that CBD may interfere with your liver’s ability to break down toxins by disrupting the cytochrome p450 complex enzyme.

Here Are Some Things You Should Know About Purchasing CBD!

The best advice is to purchase CBD from product tested places and on the container, there should be a warning section and number. There should also be ingredients listed. It’s safer to buy in-store but still research the company. Also, make sure you know if it’s isolated CBD or full-spectrum. Full-spectrum is a combination of cannabinoids, which is stronger so would only require a lower dose.

So overall, CBD has proven to show the effect on fibromyalgia, however, more research needs to be carried out and always speak to your doctor first!
